About the host school

Job shadowing: ICT in Istanbul, Turkey

It was our first time in Turkey. We got a nice invitation from Filiz Ateş Hayta, who is the Erasmus+ coordinator of the school Burhan Felek Anadolu Lisesi, offering opportunities for two of us. So Éva Unyiné Nagy and I went there and fulfilled a shadowing on ICT and mobile technology at her school.

About the school:

Burhan Felek Anadolu Lisesi is a so called secondary school in Üsküdar, Istanbul, Turkey, teaching kids from 15 to 18. The school has 835 students and 64 teachers. It has 28 classes with approximately 28 students each. We met classes with 37 and 32 students but on the other hand we had opportunities to visit small group of students (with 10 or 9 students) as well. The school has a beautiful view to Bosphorus.

As for school facilities: there are no chalk boards at school. Each room has a white board; the teachers can use different coloured board markers to write on it. There is also an IWB (Smartboard) in some classrooms but no computers, so the teachers open programs from the IWB directly. The school has a computer room too, but we did not have opportunities to visit a lesson there because it was said that the equipment is very old.   

We went to school very early each day. It was because our host’s house was about 20 km far from it but we had to consider the traffic as well. In rush hours we wouldn’t be able to reach school on time. So we set of at 6:20 each day.

We started our day in the project room and had breakfast there and of course we admired all the beautiful places that our coordinator visited in Europe with her students. The lessons started at 7:45 and each lesson was 40 minutes long with a 10 minutes break.

The traditional work form is frontal work but some of the teachers use group work or presentation to make their lessons more interesting for the students.

We visited an ICT lesson where the only IWB was used and all the kids fallowed the instructions in their books. It was a real surprise for us and we were sure that our students wouldn’t be as patient as these students were. They got homework from their teacher that they have to send to him by email.  There is Wi-Fi at school but only in the classrooms and teachers are allowed to use it.

We visited several lessons, mainly language lessons (German, English and Turkish) and IST and Turkish literature as well. The students behaved quite well but we also noticed some misbehaviour too.

During the ICT lesson students learnt how to design a power point, how to animate text in it and how to design a slide. The teacher used Microsoft Power Point program.

During other lessons the teachers used and projected the book and workbook of the class to use them as an interactive material.

We had an opportunity to meet and to talk to the school headmaster, Adem Demirci. In his huge office he had access to the camera system of the school. He was a really nice host for us, he even took us to his home town (village) near the Black sea and invited us for a delicious lunch of fish.

Our coordinator, Filiz, introduced us the school’s two Erasmus+ KA2 projects. We were surprised that students at the age of 15-18 liked reading and were able to pay for books offered by the school. Next week the school is going to invite a contemporary Turkish writer. This even is a part of one of their projects. We met the student who designed the poster for the event.

The most surprising thing for me was when a student sang for us and he sang about the topic of the lesson, what they learnt and that they had visitors from “Macaristan”.

We really enjoyed our staying there and many thanks to our host Filiz and for all the Erasmus+ teachers who made our staying unforgettable.

We also had opportunities to visit famous places in Istanbul both on the Asian and European sides. Istanbul is an amazing city with almost 20 million inhabitants. We enjoyed Turkish cuisine and won’t forget Turkish hospitality.

All in all we consider our visit a very successful one and we didn’t regret to apply for Erasmus+ Ka1.

Éva Pató Csabáné Szebényi

Job-shadowing Isztambul (Törökország)

2016. május1-8. Törökországba, Isztambul városába hívott el magával kolléganőm, Pató Csabáné Szebényi Éva, aki az Erasmus+ program koordinátora iskolánkban. Mivel ő már nagy tapasztalattal rendelkezik az utazások előkészítésében, szervezésében, több nyelvet beszél, így szívesen tettem eleget a kérésének.  Látogatásunk feladata volt megismerni az informatikaoktatást a Burhan Felek Anadolu Lisesi Gimnáziumban.

A szállásunk a gimnázium koordinátoránál, Filiz Ateş Hayta, kolléganőnél volt, aki Isztambul ázsiai részén él családjával egy lakóparkban. Minden kényelemmel ellátott bennünket és ő vitt autóval reggelente az iskolába is.

Az iskola 20 km távolságra volt a szállástól, így megtapasztalhattuk ennek a közel 20 milliós városnak a nyüzsgését, közlekedési szokásait. A diákokat iskolabuszok szállítják, amelynek költségét a diákok állják.

Meglepetésünkre a tanítási hetet közös énekléssel kezdték, melyre felsorakoztak az iskola udvarán a diákok és tanáraik. Érdekes volt látni több mint 800 tanulót, akik lelkesen énekelték az iskola indulóját. Többségük egyen pólót és pulóvert viselt.

A hét során meglátogathattunk egy informatika órát, ahol a PowerPoint szerkesztés rejtelmeit tanulták a diákok. Sajnos csak egy központi számítógép volt, a hallgatóknak könyvből kellett követniük a tananyagot. Az iskolaigazgató, Adam Demirci matematika óráján is jelen voltunk, ahol a trigonometriát idézhettük fel. Részt vettünk török irodalom órákon, melynek témái voltak a fantáziaelemek beépítése a fogalmazásba, egy másikon, a tanulók előzetes témában készítettek prezentációt, máshol képregényt készítettek. Részesei voltunk angol és német óráknak is. Talán az angol népszerűbb nyelvnek tűnt.

Többségében frontális munkát láttunk a tanórákon, ahol a tanárok elmondták a tananyagot, kérdéseket tettek fel, a diákok pedig szabadon bemondhatták a választ, egyszerre többen is. Magas osztálylétszámokkal (30-40 fő) dolgoznak a pedagógusok és belegondoltunk, milyen szerencsések vagyunk, hogy a mi iskolánkban bontott csoportban folyik az informatika és nyelvtanítás is. Nem láttunk minden tanulónál tankönyvet, sem füzetet. A diákok félévente adnak számot tudásukról egy központi felmérő teszt megírásával. Év végén, ha két alkalommal sikertelenül teljesít a diák, eltanácsolják az iskolából.

Mivel ez középiskola, kevésbé népszerű a keresztnéven való szólítás, így a barátaim (arkadaslar) megszólítást használják a tanárok.

A 40 perces órákra való be- és kicsengetést többféle kellemes dallam jelzi. A 10 perces szünetek alatt a tanárok egy része ügyel, a diákok a büfében vásárolt ételeket fogyaszthatják el. Mi a szüneteket a projekt szobában töltöttük, ami a program koordinátorának és segítőinek a kis szigete. Láthattuk, hogy készültek a plakátok a következő versenyfelhívásra, kaptunk a diákok és tanárok által közösen készített iskola újságjából.

A pedagógusok munkaideje hasonló a miénkhez. De , mint ahogy mindenütt, aki többet vállal bizony reggel 7-16 óráig is ott van az iskolában. Minimum kötelező órszámuk 15, de átlgosan 20-25 óra.

Az iskola épületeggyüttese megérett a felújításra, korszerűsítésre, melyre pályázatok útján próbálnak pénzt előteremteni.

Szabadidőnket a számtalan látnivalók, nevezetességek megtekintésével töltöttük. A kulináris élvezeteknek is hódoltunk és ittuk az elmaradhatatlan török teát.

Nagy élmény volt számomra ez a hét és remélem kolléganőmnek lesz még energiája és lehetősége további hasonló pályázatok írására, hogy minél több kollégám részesüljön ilyen a lehetőségben.
